Editions Note: At least twenty seven editions: in 1776, there were fifteen editions published in London with additional editions published in Dublin, Edingburgh, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and Charleston. There were a number of translations including a French language translation, Observations sur la nature de la liberte civile, (Rotterdam, 1776); a German language translation, Anmerkungen uber die Natur der burgerlichen Freyheit, (Brunswick, 1777); and a Dutch language translation, Aanmerkingen over den aart der burgerlyke Vryheid, (Leyden, 1777). A 1777 edition (London) was an addition to the third section. The 1778 (London) used the title, Two Tracts on Civil Liberty, the War with America, and The Debts and Fiances of the Kingdom.

APS holds a total of twenty-four copies. Among them are sixteen London editions: one presented by Herman Blum and containing his bookplate, ten total copies presented by William S. Mason [one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, one with the autograph of John Reeve, and one with the autograph of "J. Howel"], one copy received as part of the formation of the David Center for the American Revolution; and six without title notes: 123456.

APS also holds one New York with the signature of John Backus; one Edinburgh presented by Robert and Eleanor Hill which contains the autograph of James H. Walker; and six Philadelphia editions, including one presented by John Vaughan with autograph of John D. Coxe, one received as part of the formation of the David Center, and two that were bequests of Col. Richard Gimbel.
